The child is now responsible for providing emotional, mental, and physical support to the parent. What makes it even worse is if that family member is your mother, and you are a young child. Living with a family member ailed by suicidal tendencies is a horrific experience. They have two children – an elder daughter and a younger son, who narrates the story of his dysfunctional family. His quiet yet intimidating presence at home and office and his fatherly responsibility make up for the lack of a traditional mother figure at home. In the present day, she carries her indifference for social roles and is proud of not having a motherly instinct for her two children.Įm’s husband, the Big Hoom, is the rock that holds the family together. She resisted marriage after courting for seven years, which was unheard of in the catholic community for that time. Em was known for her unconventional ways, in her younger days. She loves her tea and beedis (local cigarettes). Em, the mother, is an eccentric character. What is Em and The Big Hoom about?Įm and The Big Hoom is about a middle-class Christian family of four in Bombay. Nevertheless, I would advise the reader to use personal discretion as it is a book that deals with mental illness and suicide. However, Em and The Big Hoom bypasses it completely. Some novels contain text and scenarios that trigger our latent emotions. Logic tells me that I should put in a disclaimer for trigger warnings of suicide and self-harm. Is the story fictional or inspired? The latter, I hope not, but it feels too real to label it as a fictional novel. The second time around as I read Em and The Big Hoom, I couldn’t help but marvel at the depth of the emotions Jerry Pinto has created with his characters. But back then, I was too young to appreciate the subtle nuances of the book.

I first read Em and The Big Hoom around eight years ago.
